Streaming service Spotify reported yesterday that Kendrick Lamar’s To Pimp a Butterfly album set a new “global record for the most streams in a single day worldwide.” It was streamed in excess of 9.6 million times, the first day the album was made available. If streaming continues at that rate, it could break the weekly streaming record set by Drake back in February of 17.3 million.
Mr. Lamar’s downloads monetarily translate into $44,160 in a single day globally, according to Billboard. The album not being available on iTunes until well into Monday, is what drove the traffic to Spotify.
These numbers are a testament to the alarming number of people turning to music streaming as their go-to source for music. Although Spotify is an attractive music streaming option, Pandora is still the boss, as reported by a recent study.
