Justice has been served in the case of the South Carolina altercation involving school resource officer, Ben Fields, and a student – the incident of which was bravely caught on an onlooker’s cell phone camera, and later went viral.
According to NBC News reports, Richland County Sheriff Leon Lott said an internal investigation was conducted of the Monday incident at Spring Valley High in Columbia, and focused on whether Senior Deputy Ben Fields, 34, violated the department’s policies.
At a news conference Lott said that the department looked at various cellphone videos taken in the class during the incident, and had interviews with witnesses and concluded that the maneuvers he used in the confrontation were “not acceptable.”
“From the very beginning that’s what caused me to be upset, and what continued to upset me is that he picked the student up and threw the student across the room,” said Lott. “Deputy Ben Fields did wrong this past Monday.”
Lott further said: “What she did doesn’t justify what our deputy did. It doesn’t justify his actions, but she needs to be held responsible for what she did,” he said. He also said that Fields was remorseful and tried to de-escalate allegations of targeted racism by saying the resource officer had a Black girlfriend.
